Dental Care: The Health Habit Most Dogs Are Missing

It doesn't get the attention that diet or exercise does, but dental care is one of the biggest levers on a dog's long-term health — and it's one most owners never quite get around to.

Why it actually matters

Periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition seen in adult dogs. Veterinary sources estimate that over 80% of dogs develop some degree of dental disease by around age three, and the number keeps climbing with age. Left unmanaged, it's not just about bad breath — it causes pain, tooth loss, and can let bacteria into the bloodstream. The encouraging part: it's also one of the most preventable conditions in veterinary medicine, and daily brushing is the single most effective thing an owner can do about it.

Building the habit gradually

  • Start with your finger. Let your dog lick a small amount of dog-specific toothpaste off your finger for a few days so the taste becomes familiar
  • Move to a soft dog toothbrush (or a finger brush), gently rubbing along the gumline where plaque builds up most
  • Keep early sessions short — a few seconds is a win. Add a favorite treat or praise right after
  • Build up to once a day. Even a few times a week is meaningfully better than nothing, but daily is what actually slows plaque formation

Go at your dog's pace. A dog who tolerates thirty seconds this week may accept a full minute in a month.

Never use human toothpaste

This is worth repeating because it's an easy mistake: human toothpaste is made to be spit out, not swallowed, and often contains fluoride and sometimes xylitol — both of which are unsafe for dogs in the amounts a dog would swallow. Always use a toothpaste made specifically for dogs, which is formulated to be safely swallowed and usually comes in flavors dogs actually enjoy (poultry, malt).

If brushing just isn't happening yet

Look for products carrying the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) Seal of Acceptance — an independent review that only awards its seal to dental chews, diets, water additives, and other products that have been clinically shown to meaningfully reduce plaque or tartar. It's not as effective as daily brushing, but a VOHC-accepted chew is a reasonable bridge while you build the brushing habit, and your vet can point you to accepted options in the category that suits your dog.

When to see a vet instead of handling it at home

  • Breath that's suddenly much worse than your dog's normal
  • Visibly loose, broken, or discolored teeth
  • Bleeding, red, or swollen gums
  • Pawing at the mouth, dropping food, chewing on one side, or reluctance to eat

Any of these warrant a dental exam — some may need a professional cleaning under anesthesia, which lets your vet check below the gumline where home care can't reach.

VOHC(Veterinary Oral Health Council・獣医口腔衛生協議会)のシール(認証マーク)が付いた製品を探してみてください。
