What the Research Says: Dogs, Work, and a Healthier Society

Dogs are good company. But do they actually make people healthier, calmer, and better at their jobs? We went through the peer-reviewed research so you don't have to. Every number below comes from a published study or an official statistic, linked at the end — and where the evidence is thin, we say so.
1. At work: less stress, more engagement (with caveats)
- In a Virginia Commonwealth University study (Barker et al., 2012), employees who brought their dog to work reported falling stress over the day, while colleagues without a dog reported rising stress. On days the dog stayed home, the same owners' stress rose like everyone else's. Salivary cortisol, however, showed no significant difference — the effect was in how people felt, not in the hormone.
- A UK survey of 749 workers (Hall & Mills, 2019) found that people who frequently bring their dog to the office scored higher on work engagement (4.28 vs 3.52 on a 6-point scale), lower on intention to quit (15.2 vs 17.8), and higher on workplace friendships and overall work quality of life. Effect sizes were small-to-medium, and the sample was self-selected and ~90% women.
- In three lab experiments (Colarelli et al., 2017), work groups with a companion dog in the room showed more verbal cohesion and cooperation on a problem-solving task and rated teammates as more trustworthy.
- Case studies of dog-friendly companies (Wagner & Pina e Cunha, 2021) found the benefits — lower stress, better communication — showed up only where the culture was already flexible. Rigid rules around dogs created new pressure instead.
Industry surveys paint a rosier picture: a Nationwide/HABRI study of 2,002 US office workers reported 91% engagement at pet-friendly companies vs 65% elsewhere, and 88% vs 73% intending to stay 12 months. Those surveys are funded by pet-industry sponsors and rely on self-report, so read them as directional, not definitive.
2. Health: the strongest evidence is cardiovascular
- A 2019 meta-analysis of 10 studies and 3.8 million people (Kramer et al., Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes) found dog owners had a 24% lower risk of death from any cause (RR 0.76) and a 31% lower risk of cardiovascular death (RR 0.69) over ~10 years of follow-up.
- A Swedish national cohort of 3.4 million people (Mubanga et al., 2017) found single-person households with a dog had a 33% lower mortality hazard (HR 0.67). Importantly, a twin sub-study could not reproduce the effect — healthier people may simply be more likely to get a dog.
- Dog owners are far more likely to hit exercise guidelines: 4.1× the odds of reaching 150 minutes/week of activity in a UK study (Westgarth et al., 2019), and a median of 160 minutes of dog-walking per week across 29 studies (Christian et al., 2013). Effect sizes for total activity are small-to-medium.
- In a classic stress experiment (Allen et al., 2002), pet owners had lower resting heart rate and blood pressure, smaller reactions to stress tasks, and faster recovery — lowest of all when their pet was in the room. A 2018 meta-analysis of 1,310 people (Ein et al.) confirmed animal contact lowers heart rate and self-reported anxiety, but found no consistent effect on blood pressure.
- The oxytocin loop: Azabu University researchers (Nagasawa et al., Science, 2015) showed that when a dog gazes at its owner, the owner's oxytocin rises — and the owner's affection raises the dog's in turn. Wolves raised by humans don't do this. It's a biological bond, not just a nice feeling.
3. Community: dogs make neighbours into friends
- Across four cities in Australia and the US (Wood et al., 2015, n≈2,700), pet owners were 61% more likely to know their neighbours (OR 1.61). Dog owners were 2.6× more likely to count someone they met through their pet as a real friend, and about 40% had received social support — emotional, practical, or informational — through pet connections.
- In Japan, the Japan Pet Food Association's 2025 national survey counts roughly 6.8 million pet dogs, and notes that single people in their 20s–30s are more likely than average to cite "expanding my social circle" as a reason for getting one.
4. What the evidence does NOT say
- Almost all of this is correlation, not causation. The mortality meta-analysis states its results were not adjusted for confounders; the Swedish twin study is a reminder that healthy people choose dogs, not only the reverse.
- Effect sizes are often small. Cortisol didn't budge in the workplace study; blood pressure didn't in the therapy meta-analysis.
- Several studies are funded by the pet industry (Mars/WALTHAM, Royal Canin) — disclosed in the papers, but worth knowing.
- Dogs at work carry real risks: allergies, bites, legal liability, and the dog's own welfare. A review by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Foreman et al., 2017) treats these as HR issues to plan for, not afterthoughts. In one industry survey, 70% of HR decision-makers named allergies as their top concern.
Why this matters for GBDI
The research points to a simple conclusion: the benefits of dogs in shared spaces are real but conditional. They show up when dogs are calm, owners are considerate, and venues stay in control of their own rules. 犬がそばにいると気持ちがいい。それは誰でも知っています。でも本当に、人を健康にし、落ち着かせ、仕事の質まで上げるのでしょうか? 査読論文と公的統計を読み込んでまとめました。以下の数字はすべて末尾の出典にある原文の数値です。根拠が弱いところは、弱いと書いています。
1. 職場: ストレスは下がり、仕事への没頭は上がる(ただし条件つき)
- バージニア・コモンウェルス大学の研究(Barker ら, 2012)では、犬を職場に連れてきた従業員は1日を通じてストレスが低下し、犬のいない同僚は逆に上昇しました。同じ飼い主でも犬を家に置いてきた日は、他の人と同じように上昇。ただし唾液コルチゾール(ストレスホルモン)には有意差なし。効果は「感じ方」に出て、ホルモンには出ませんでした。
- 英国の749人調査(Hall & Mills, 2019)では、犬を頻繁にオフィスに連れてくる人はワークエンゲージメントが高く(6点満点で4.28 vs 3.52)、離職意向が低く(15.2 vs 17.8)、職場の友人関係・仕事の生活の質も高い結果。効果量は小〜中程度で、回答者の約9割が女性・自己選択サンプルという限界があります。
- 3つの実験室研究(Colarelli ら, 2017)では、部屋に犬がいるグループは問題解決課題で協力的な発言が増え、意思決定課題では仲間をより信頼できると評価しました。
- 犬同伴OK企業の事例研究(Wagner & Pina e Cunha, 2021)では、ストレス低下やコミュニケーション改善はもともと柔軟な組織文化がある場合にだけ現れ、硬直したルール運用では逆に新しいプレッシャーを生みました。
業界調査はもっと景気のいい数字を出しています。Nationwide/HABRIの米国オフィスワーカー2,002人調査では、ペット同伴可の企業で「仕事に没頭している」91%(非対応企業65%)、「12か月後も在籍予定」88%(同73%)。ただしペット業界の出資・自己申告の調査なので、方向性を示すものとして読むのが適切です。
2. 健康: いちばん強い根拠は心臓と血管
- 10研究・381万人を統合した2019年のメタ解析(Kramer ら, Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes)では、犬の飼い主は約10年の追跡で全死亡リスクが24%低く(RR 0.76)、心血管死が31%低い(RR 0.69)という結果でした。
- スウェーデン全国343万人のコホート(Mubanga ら, 2017)では、単身世帯で犬を飼っている人の死亡ハザードが33%低下(HR 0.67)。ただし双生児だけを比べた副次解析では効果を再現できず、「健康な人ほど犬を飼う」という逆の因果の可能性が残っています。
- 犬の飼い主は運動ガイドラインを達成しやすい: 英国の研究(Westgarth ら, 2019)では週150分の身体活動を達成するオッズが4.1倍。29研究のレビュー(Christian ら, 2013)では犬の散歩は週あたり中央値160分。総活動量への効果量は小〜中です。
- 有名なストレス実験(Allen ら, 2002)では、ペットの飼い主は安静時の心拍・血圧が低く、ストレス課題への反応が小さく、回復が速い。ペットが同じ部屋にいる時が最も反応が小さく回復が速い結果でした。1,310人を統合した2018年のメタ解析(Ein ら)も、動物との接触で心拍と主観的な不安が下がることを確認しましたが、血圧への一貫した効果は認めていません。
- オキシトシンの輪: 麻布大学のチーム(永澤ら, Science, 2015)は、犬が飼い主を見つめると飼い主のオキシトシンが上がり、飼い主が撫でると犬のオキシトシンも上がる正のループを示しました。人に育てられたオオカミではこれが起きません。気分の問題ではなく、生物学的な絆です。
3. 地域: 犬が隣人を友人にする
- オーストラリアと米国の4都市・約2,700人(Wood ら, 2015)で、ペットの飼い主は近所の人と知り合う確率が61%高く(OR 1.61)、犬の飼い主はペット経由で知り合った人を「友人」とみなす確率が2.6倍。約40%がペットのつながりを通じて情緒的・実用的・情報的な支えを受けていました。
- 日本では、ペットフード協会の2025年全国調査で飼育犬は約682万頭。20〜30代の単身者は「交友関係を広げるため」に犬を飼い始める割合が全体より高いと報告されています。
4. 研究が「言っていない」こと
- ほぼすべてが相関であって因果ではありません。死亡率のメタ解析は抄録で「混雑要因の調整をしていない」と明記。スウェーデンの双生児解析は「健康な人が犬を選ぶ」可能性を示しています。
- 効果量はしばしば小さい。職場研究ではコルチゾールが動かず、セラピーのメタ解析では血圧が動きませんでした。
- いくつかの研究はペット業界の資金(Mars/WALTHAM、Royal Canin)で行われています。論文内に開示されていますが、知っておくべき点です。
- 職場の犬には現実のリスクがあります: アレルギー、咬傷、法的責任、そして犬自身の福祉。米国労働安全衛生研究所(NIOSH)のレビュー(Foreman ら, 2017)はこれらを「後で考えること」ではなく人事が計画すべき課題として整理しています。ある業界調査では人事責任者の70%がアレルギーを最大の懸念に挙げました。
GBDIにとっての意味
研究が示すのはシンプルな結論です。共有空間に犬がいることの効果は本物ですが、条件つき。犬が落ち着いていて、飼い主が配慮し、お店が自分のルールを握っている時に現れます。それこそがGBDIの行動評価と提携店モデルが保証しようとしていること。カフェもオフィスも街も、いい面だけを受け取れるように。
