Cleaning Your Dog's Ears — Safely

Healthy dog ears mostly take care of themselves. A quick check every week or two — and a proper clean when they actually need it — is usually all it takes.

What you'll need

  • A veterinary or pet-specific ear cleaning solution (ask your vet which one suits your dog's ears)
  • Cotton balls or gauze
  • Treats, for afterwards

Never use these:

  • Cotton swabs (Q-tips) pushed into the ear canal — they can pack debris further in or injure the eardrum
  • Alcohol or hydrogen peroxide — these sting broken or inflamed skin and can be genuinely painful

How to do it

  • Fill the ear canal generously with the cleaning solution — don't be shy about it
  • Gently massage the base of the ear (below the opening) for about 30 seconds. You should hear a soft squelching sound as it loosens debris
  • Let your dog shake their head — this brings a lot of the loosened debris up and out on its own
  • Wipe the visible part of the ear flap and the part of the canal you can reach with a cotton ball or gauze, going only as far as your finger reaches

That's it. No swab needs to go deeper than your finger can follow.

How often

There's no universal schedule — it depends on the dog. Floppy-eared breeds (Cocker Spaniels, Basset Hounds) and dogs who swim often tend to need more frequent cleaning because their ears trap moisture. A short check during your regular grooming routine is usually enough to know if today's the day.

When to stop and call your vet instead

  • Your dog yelps, flinches, or clearly seems to be in pain during cleaning
  • The ear smells bad, looks red or swollen, or there's a dark, coffee-ground-like discharge
  • Your dog is shaking their head constantly or scratching at one ear more than usual

These can be signs of an ear infection (otitis externa), which needs a vet's diagnosis — putting cleaner in an infected or painful ear can make things worse, not better.

A relaxed, treat-filled ear-cleaning session is a nice bonding moment once your dog gets used to it. Go slow the first few times.
