Summer Heat Safety: Preventing Heatstroke in Dogs
Summer heat safety isn't just seasonal small talk — dogs regulate their temperature so differently from humans that heat genuinely puts them at risk in ways that are easy to underestimate.
Why dogs overheat more easily than we do
Dogs have very few sweat glands, mostly limited to their paw pads, so they rely on panting as their primary way to cool down — moisture evaporating off the tongue and airway pulls heat out of the body. It's a real cooling mechanism, but a much less efficient one than full-body sweating, and it can only do so much in extreme heat.
Who's at higher risk
- Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds — pugs, bulldogs, boxers — because their airway shape makes panting less effective, especially during exertion
- Dogs with thick or heavy coats
- Very young, senior, overweight, or larger-bodied dogs
- Any dog exercising in hot or especially humid weather
Never leave a dog in a parked car — even briefly
This one is worth repeating every summer because the numbers are more extreme than intuition suggests: a car's interior can climb about 20°F (11°C) above the outside temperature in just 10 minutes, and nearly 30°F (17°C) within 20 minutes. Cracking the windows barely changes this. On a day that feels like a mild 21°C outside, the inside of a parked car can pass 43°C within the hour. Heatstroke in these conditions can set in within minutes, and it can become life-threatening fast.
Early warning signs
- Heavy, labored panting
- Excessive drooling
- Lethargy or reluctance to move
- Bright red or dark gums
These are your cue to act immediately: move to shade or air conditioning, offer water, and start cooling.
Emergency signs — go to a vet right away
- Collapse or inability to stand
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Seizures or muscle tremors
- Uncoordinated movement, disorientation, or unresponsiveness
Any of these means this is a medical emergency, not a wait-and-see situation.
How to cool your dog safely on the way to the vet
- Move your dog out of the heat immediately — shade or an air-conditioned space
- Use cool or tepid water, never ice-cold water or ice, on the belly, armpits, groin, and paws. Water that's too cold can cause blood vessels near the skin to constrict, which actually traps heat in the body's core instead of releasing it
- Offer small amounts of fresh water to drink, but don't force it
- The general first-aid approach vets recommend is "cool first, transport second" — start cooling right where you are, then head to the vet as soon as you reasonably can
See a vet even if your dog seems to recover
A dog can look like they've bounced back and still be at risk of serious complications developing hours later, so any suspected heatstroke is worth a veterinary check, not just a wait-and-see at home.
