Trimming Your Dog's Nails Without the Drama
愛犬の爪切り、慌てずに安全にやる方法
Nail trims make more dogs (and owners) nervous than almost any other routine care task — but a slow, steady approach makes it manageable for nearly everyone.
Finding the quick
The "quick" is the blood vessel and nerve running through the center of the nail.
- On light or clear nails, you can usually see it as a pink area inside the nail — stay well clear of it
- On dark or black nails, you can't see the quick, so the safe approach is to trim in small slices — about 1mm at a time — and stop as soon as you see a soft, slightly darker dot appear in the center of the cut surface. That dot means the quick is close
How to trim
- Use a dog-specific nail trimmer (guillotine or scissor-style), not human clippers, which can crush or splinter the nail
- Hold the paw gently but firmly, and trim at a slight angle, following the natural curve of the nail
- If your dog pulls their paw away or seems uncomfortable, stop — that's often a sign you're getting close to the quick
- Little and often beats a big trim all at once. Weekly or every other week keeps nails at a manageable length, so you're never making a drastic cut
If you do nick the quick
It happens to almost every dog owner at some point, and it looks scarier than it is.
- Stay calm — your dog will pick up on your energy
- Press a pea-sized amount of styptic powder firmly onto the tip of the nail for about 30 seconds
- No styptic powder on hand? Cornstarch, plain flour, or a bar of soap pressed onto the tip works as a stand-in
- If bleeding continues for more than several minutes despite pressure, call your vet
A few extra tips
- Trim after a walk or bath, when nails are slightly softer
- Reward generously — a nail trim that ends in treats is a nail trim your dog tolerates next time too
- If your dog is extremely nail-shy, ask your vet or a groomer to demonstrate technique, or to do the first few trims for you while you build up confidence together

血管（クイック）の見分け方
「クイック」とは、爪の中心を通っている血管と神経のことです。
- 白っぽい・透明な爪なら、内側にピンク色の部分として透けて見えます。その部分には絶対に触れないように
- 黒い爪はクイックが見えないため、1回に1mm程度ずつ薄く切り進め、切り口の中心にやや柔らかく色の濃い点が見えた時点で止めるのが安全です。その点はクイックが近い合図です
切り方
- 人間用の爪切りではなく、犬専用のもの（ギロチンタイプまたはハサミタイプ）を使う。人間用は爪を潰したり割ったりする恐れがあります
- 足をやさしく、でもしっかり支え、爪の自然なカーブに沿って少し角度をつけて切ります
- 犬が足を引っ込めたり嫌がる様子を見せたら、そこで止める。クイックに近づいているサインであることが多いです
- 一気に短くしようとせず、少しずつ・こまめに。週1回か隔週くらいのペースなら、いつも軽い調整で済み、大きく切りすぎるリスクが減ります
もし出血させてしまったら
ほとんどの飼い主さんが一度は経験することで、見た目ほど深刻なことは多くありません。
- まずは落ち着いて。犬は飼い主さんの緊張を敏感に感じ取ります
- 止血パウダーを小豆1粒ほど、爪の先にしっかり押し当てて30秒ほど待ちます
- 手元になければ、片栗粉や小麦粉、固形石鹸を押し当てるのでも代用できます
- しっかり圧迫しても数分以上出血が止まらない場合は、動物病院に連絡してください
その他のコツ
- 散歩の後やお風呂上がりなど、爪が少し柔らかくなっているタイミングで切ると良いです
- 終わったらしっかりごほうびを。「爪切り＝おやつがもらえる」と覚えると次回も協力してくれやすくなります
- 極端に爪切りを嫌がる子は、獣医師やトリマーに手技を見せてもらったり、最初の何回かはお願いして、少しずつ自信をつけていくのも良い方法です。
