Fleas, Ticks, and Heartworm: Why Vets Say Year-Round Prevention

Parasite prevention is one of those things that's easy to get lax about — nothing seems to be happening, so it's tempting to skip a month. Here's why veterinary guidance generally says not to.

Fleas: more than just itching

A flea infestation causes real discomfort — itching, skin irritation, and allergic reactions in sensitive dogs — and it multiplies fast, since fleas can lay eggs throughout your home, not just on your dog. Once established, an infestation is far more work to clear from carpets and bedding than it would have been to prevent in the first place.

Ticks: the bigger risk is what they carry

Ticks can transmit several diseases to dogs, including Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis. These illnesses can cause fever, joint pain and lameness, lethargy, and in more serious or chronic cases, blood and neurological problems. Many vets recommend annual combination blood testing for heartworm and these tick-borne diseases, since early infection often shows no obvious symptoms.

Heartworm: the one that's genuinely serious

Heartworm is a parasitic worm spread entirely through mosquito bites, which means any place with mosquitoes — which is most places — carries some risk. It's a real disease: worms live in the heart and blood vessels, and untreated infection can cause lasting heart and lung damage. The reassuring part is that heartworm is almost 100% preventable with the right medication, given consistently. The less reassuring part is that treating an existing infection is expensive, difficult, and requires months of strict exercise restriction. Prevention is dramatically easier and cheaper than treatment, in both money and stress.

Why prevention is usually recommended year-round, not just "in season"

Mosquito and tick activity used to be thought of as seasonal, but veterinary parasite specialists now generally advise treating it as year-round in most regions. Mild winters, indoor mosquitoes, and shifting weather patterns mean pockets of activity can show up outside the months owners used to consider safe — and a single missed mosquito bite is all it takes for heartworm transmission. That's the core reasoning behind the common veterinary recommendation: monthly, year-round prevention rather than seasonal use.

What to actually do

  • Ask your vet which combination of flea, tick, and heartworm prevention fits your dog's size, health history, and where you live and travel — products and regional risk vary enough that this isn't a one-size-fits-all choice
  • Give preventives on schedule, every month, all year — missed or late doses are the most common reason prevention fails
  • Keep up with your vet's recommended heartworm/tick-disease testing, typically annual, especially before restarting a preventive after any gap

When to call your vet

  • Any tick you find attached to your dog (removal technique matters — ask your vet for the safe way to do it)
  • Unexplained lethargy, joint pain, appetite loss, or lameness
  • A cough, reduced stamina, or fainting, which can (rarely) be signs of advanced heartworm disease
